Justice is supporting a survivor. Justice involves holding the offender accountable and respecting the wishes and demands of the survivor. The goal of justice involves restoring a survivor and the greater community, holding the offender to his/her obligations to the survivor(s) and the greater community, and addressing the root causes of the problem to help prevent future violence. It is not enough for a society to label violence “criminal”. We must respond to crime in a way that helps restore the survivors and communities, while letting it inform our preventive and rehabilitative efforts.
